Spring has officially sprung in Alabama, and with it comes a bounty of fresh, flavorful, and nutrient-packed produce. This is the perfect time to freshen up your meals with seasonal fruits and vegetables—and there are plenty of reasons to do just that!

When we rotate our diets with the seasons, we benefit from greater variety in nutrients, more vibrant flavors, and stronger support for our local farmers and environment. Plus, it’s easier on your wallet. Here’s why spring produce should be taking center stage on your plate this season:

Why Eating Seasonal Produce Matters

Better Nutrition

Fruits and vegetables harvested during their natural season are more nutritionally dense. That means more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants when your body needs them most.

Better Flavor

You haven’t truly tasted a carrot until you’ve had one in peak season. In-season produce is harvested at its prime, giving you bold, authentic flavor in every bite.

Better for Local Farmers & the Environment

Buying seasonal and local helps support Alabama’s farming community and cuts down on the transportation miles your food travels—less gas, less oil, and a lower carbon footprint.

Better for Your Budget

Seasonal items are often more affordable because they’re abundant and don’t require costly storage or transport from across the country (or globe).

4. Carrots

Packed with vitamin A, which is essential for healthy vision.

5. Radishes

A good source of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants that support cellular health.

6. Spinach

8. Lettuces

A great source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K.

9. Sweet Potatoes

Boost your health by eating the rainbow—discover the unique nutrients and benefits of colorful seasonal produce in every bite.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend at least 5 servings of fruits and/or vegetables per day. Eating a colorful mix of seasonal produce ensures your diet is:

  • High in fiber
  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Anti-inflammatory
